Dental Implant Treatment

What is Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implants are a modern and highly effective solution for replacing missing teeth. In simple terms, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the jawbone. It provides a stable foundation for a replacement tooth, crown, or even a set of dentures. Unlike dentures, implants are a permanent solution and can last for many years with proper care.

dental implants are generally very safe, but like any medical procedure, there are potential side effects. Here are some of the common ones:

  • Swelling: Mild swelling of the gums and face may occur after the procedure, but it usually subsides within a few days.
  • Pain or discomfort: Some soreness at the implant site is normal after surgery and can be managed with pain relief medication.
  • Infection: Though rare, infection around the implant area can happen if proper oral hygiene is not maintained.
  • Nerve damage: In rare cases, the implant might be placed too close to a nerve, causing numbness, pain, or tingling in the lips, chin, or gums.
  • Sinus problems: For implants in the upper jaw, there’s a small risk of sinus complications if the implant protrudes into a sinus cavity.
  • Bone loss or implant failure: This can occur if the bone doesn’t integrate properly with the implant, which is why follow-up care is important.

implant process involves
several steps

  • Initial consultation and evaluation:
    • We’ll first assess the patient’s dental and medical history, conduct X-rays, and possibly a 3D scan to evaluate the jawbone structure.
    • A treatment plan is created to determine if the patient is a good candidate for the implant.
  • Bone grafting (if necessary):
    • In cases where the patient doesn’t have enough bone to support the implant, bone grafting may be done to strengthen the jawbone.
  • Implant placement surgery:
    • The titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone.
    • After surgery, the bone will need to heal and integrate with the implant, a process called osseointegration, which can take 3 to 6 months.
  • Abutment placement:
    • Once the implant has fused with the bone, a small connector called an abutment is attached to the implant. This will hold the replacement tooth.
  • Crown placement:
    • After the gums heal, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is created and attached to the abutment, completing the process.
  • Follow-up care:
    • Regular check-ups are essential to ensure the implant is functioning well, and proper oral hygiene must be maintained to prevent any complications.

This procedure involves removing all the pulp in the pulp chamber temporarily for the sake of pain relief. Pulpectomy is typically called for when pulpotomy isn’t an option and all of the tooth’s pulp has become infected, inflamed, and disease-ridden. After removal, the canals are medicated and cleaned.

Sometimes, dentists do pulpectomy on primary or milk teeth. In such cases, the pulp is replaced with resorbable material. This is the recommended course of action for irreversible pulpitis on redicular and coronal pulp as well as primary molars that are abscessed.
